Access and Opportunity Across the ABE Program
Inequities in access to STEM education and participation in careers persist around the world. The ABE Program and the Amgen Foundation are focused on reaching students furthest from opportunity, including those from low-income, low socioeconomic, and rural communities. In response, ABE employs strategies and promotes practices to expand pathways for those from populations with the fewest opportunities and resources to access, engage in, and succeed in bioscience.
ABE advances this work through efforts to:
- Include people with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives as program designers, implementers, and participants
- Develop resources and supports to increase the relevance and accessibility of ABE for students from underresourced schools and communities
- Expand program implementation models to increase access and opportunities for those populations furthest from opportunity
Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that all students can access and engage in the ABE experience. We work with our global sites to identify and address barriers to participation in their communities. We develop resources to help teachers make ABE an inclusive experience for students. We also share stories of a range of scientists and others who work in the field and their contributions so that any student can see themselves as a potential member of the field.
