Gene-ius at Work: Genetic Counseling and Cystic Fibrosis

""

In this unit, developed by ABE Australia Master Teacher Fellow Matthew Clough, students step into the role of genetic counselors to explore the inheritance and ethical implications of genetic diseases, using cystic fibrosis as a case study. Students apply laboratory techniques, including micropipetting, gel electrophoresis, and DNA analysis, to determine genotypes. In addition, they analyze pedigrees, create Punnett squares, and engage in in-depth discussion of bioethics to communicate findings to their patients and evaluate the implications of genetic testing in medicine.
