This month, we dedicate this space to Jan Chalupny, the longtime site director of ABE Washington State. According to ABE-WA teacher Jodie Spitze, it was immediately apparent that she’s an incredible educator: “She had the ability to take remarkably complex concepts and make them understandable to someone without an advanced education in the topic. She had developed all sorts of hands-on, concrete activities to teach processes that cannot be readily observed.” Jan has continuously expanded the ABE-WA program, providing innovative materials that give students real-life practice with a wealth of biotechnology tools, topics, and problems. She involves the teacher community in curriculum development and outreach, giving them an opportunity to expand their skills and networks.
